My dreams open me,
gut me,
bleed me dry.
I wake in the morning
in such profound mourning
pinned to the bed by an unspeakable grief
the loss of impossible touch.
There was a woman
with a list -
snow fell with night
and we lay together.
This was the reckoning. This was a page torn from the Book of Life.
I knew that men were coming to finish me,
but I was happy,
I was ready.
I woke to rains and misery.
I woke to me.

Though it can be disappointing when you imagine they're coming for you by dawn and then you wake up as normal...
